SO MANY WAYS FINDS ONE TO WIN SCHUYLERVILLE

Ridden by jockey Javier Castellano for trainer Tony Dutrow, So Many Ways raced 3 ½ lengths behind front-runner Baby J through an opening quarter-mile in 22.22 seconds before advancing four-wide on the outside with an eighth of a mile to go. Under steady urging, the daughter of Sightseeing out of the Dehere mare Happy Scene cleared away from runner-up Can’t Explain and the weakening Baby J to win the six-furlong dirt race by 1 ½ lengths in a time of 1:11.51.
The victory capped an stakes double for the Dutrow family on opening day at Saratoga as Tony’s brother, Rick, won the Grade 3, $100,000 James Marvin with sprinter Pacific Ocean.
“I told the entry clerk who took the entries we were going to win this race,” Tony Dutrow said in the winner’s circle. “I’ve won this race before [Touch Love in 2001] with a horse that wasn’t as fast as her. I thought we’d be in good shape out there with the way this filly can finish up and we were.”
So Many Ways, owned by Maggi Moss, had made only one start prior to the Schuylerville, an eight-length victory in a 4 ½-furlong sprint on June 9 at Parx Racing. She won the debut on the lead and her off-the-pace stakes score was especially impressive as three of the four winners of sprints earlier on the card led gate-to-wire.
“She’s a really nice filly, really good in the way she’s developing, and I’m really excited about her,” Castellano said. “There was a lot of speed in the race today. I’m fortunate; I just got her covered up behind horses, and she responded well today.”
As the 5-2 favorite in a field of six, So Many paid $7.60 for a $2 win bet.
Next up for So Many Ways might be the Grade 1, $300,000 Spinaway at seven furlongs on September 2 at the Spa.
“I do think this filly will go on,” Dutrow said. “Her pedigree says she’ll stretch out. Absolutely [I’ll] look at the Spinaway.”
