TWO BREEDERS' CUP TURF SPRINT WINNERS HEADLINE ARLINGTON SPRINT
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (July 4, 2012) – Vinery Stables’ Regally Ready and Carl R. Moore Management’s Chamberlain Bridge, the last two winners of the Grade II Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, will meet at Arlington Park on Saturday to do battle at 5 ½ furlongs on the turf in the $100,000 Arlington Sprint.
Regally Ready, the defending Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint champion, makes his first stateside start since disappointing when shipped to Dubai in March where the son of More Than Ready ran 14th in the Group I Al Quoz Sprint. Since returning to the U.S., the 5-year-old gelding has strung together a string of solid workouts at Churchill Downs. Trainer Steve Asmussen has tabbed Corey Nakatani to ride.
Now an 8-year-old, Chamberlain Bridge captured both the Arlington Sprint and the Breeders’ Cup Sprint in 2010 but has only won twice since then – most recently taking the $75,000 Bonapaw Stakes at the Fair Grounds last December. Miguel Mena picks up the mount aboard the Bret Calhoun-trained son of War Chant.
Although winless in three starts this year, the Louie Roussel III-trained Mambo Galliano is a stakes winner having captured the $150,000 Duncan F. Kenner in New Orleans in March 2011. The 6-year-old Black Mambo gelding looks to improve off a fifth-place finish in a turf allowance dash here in May. Tim Thornton gets the call.
Late Night Stables’ Birdie Beats Par has shown an affinity for turf sprints with three such scores in 2011. His only start this year resulted in a seventh-place finish in an allowance race over the all-weather surface at Presque Isle Downs in May. The Tom Amoss-trained son of Aragorn will be ridden Saturday by James Graham.
Completing the field for Saturday’s headliner (with jockeys named) are: Silverton Hill’s Longhunter (Robby Albarado), winless in two starts this year but a stakes winner in 2011; and Margaret Bulingham’s Saint Leon (E. T. Baird), a gate-to-wire winner in a turf allowance dash on May 26.
