Future Job Creation
Major Unions Endorse Suffolk Downs Site
39 Job Categories Will Be Offered
(EAST BOSTON--- June 27, 2012) Suffolk Downs today confirmed the endorsement of its bid to win a license to develop a world-class casino resort by major area labor organizations and released details on the extent of the job creation that will result from its proposed development.
Citing unemployment rates of 6.8% in Revere, 7.1% in Lynn, and 7.3% in Chelsea as examples, the 77-year-old track’s neighboring communities have some of the highest rates in the state. The job creation details show likely hiring will occur in a range of job categories with salary and benefits that would boost workers and the local economy.

At the same time the details on job categories were release, The Boston Metropolitan Building Trades Council and the Greater Boston Central Labor Council today announced their endorsement of the Suffolk Downs site as their recommended site for a resort casino in Region A.
“This project will create thousands of permanent, good-paying jobs with benefits and opportunity for advancement,” said Rich Rogers, Executive Secretary of the Greater Boston Labor Council. “The project will provide employment opportunities across a wide spectrum, from white-collar professional to blue collar and service sector, in an area of communities most in need of these jobs,” he added.
The Resort at Suffolk Downs will generate 4,000 jobs with an average annual salary of $42,000, along with benefits and opportunities for career advancement. The Resort at Suffolk Downs will seek a diverse pool of candidates and will provide full job training.
According to a 2009 UMass Boston study, gaming workers in resort casino settings receive higher pay and more generous job benefits than workers in similar non-gaming jobs.
“The Resort at Suffolk Downs will provide extensive training for new hires and employ thousands of union workers,” said Chip Tuttle, Chief Operating Officer of Suffolk Downs. “We are looking forward to putting people to work in the surrounding communities where it will have a significant positive impact.”
Along with the full time jobs once the resort is developed, officials project 2,500 construction-related jobs would be created to build the destination resort and related road infrastructure improvements.
Earlier this month, Suffolk Downs announced its plans for a Caesars-branded world-class resort and casino at New England’s only thoroughbred racetrack. The $1 billion development plan for the 163-acre site includes a hotel, restaurants, a casino gaming complex, retail shops, entertainment areas, luxury spa facilities and horse racing.
