BEAUGAY (G3) QUOTES
Jimmy Toner, winning trainer of Winter Memories (No. 1): “She put in a really nice race. She really did. You could see they were all just getting ready to box her in there, and [jockey Eddie Castro] was patient. When they tried to push him back in, he came back out. Boy, he rode a beautiful race.”
“I guess that’s one time [her size] came in handy. Rosie [Napravnik on Check the Label] was throwing a little move on her, but she was able to ease out a little bit, and she was big enough to push her out and be able to make her run.”
“We’ll go back in the Just a Game [Grade 1,
Eddie Castro, winning jockey aboard Winter Memories (No. 1): “She relaxed fine in the beginning behind the other horses. I knew there was not too much speed, so I had to be right there. With no speed – the turf is really soft, too – I had to wait, wait. At the top of the stretch, the other horse pushed me in, but I pushed back a little bit. When she was clear and she could run, she took off.”
On winning his 2,000th race: “I feel very happy to do a good job. Thank you to my agent [Mike Gonzalez], and all the owners and trainers. Thank God. Hopefully we can keep going, maybe to win another 2,000!”
John W. Phillips, winning owner of Winter Memories (No. 1): “It’s always exciting. She’s got a great turn of foot, when she has an opportunity to use it. I think everyone else understands that, so they sort of plan accordingly and it makes it very exciting. She’s a horse of the heart. Not only herself, but the whole family. It’s great to see her competing again.”
