HAVELOCK GETS UP TO WIN GRADE III HANSHIN CUP

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (May 19, 2012) – Under a well-timed ride by jockey Florent Geroux, Silverton Hills LLC's Havelock got up in the final strides to overtake favored Lonesome Street to win the Grade III Hanshin Cup by a neck on Saturday at Arlington Park.  The Darrin Miller-trained son of Great Notion covered the mile over Polytrack in 1:37.10.

"They (the connections) told me the race today was kind of far him so the key was to get perfect timing," Geroux said.  "He broke pretty sharp and we stayed just behind the first flight.  I didn't want to go five wide the whole way so I took him inside on the turn to try to save ground. I had enough horse in the turn but I didn't want to make the lead too soon.  The mile is about as far as he can go. I tried to have good timing to get there."

Lonesome Street, the 2-1 betting choice, grabbed the lead right from the start and took the field of nine through fractions of 24.12 seconds, 47.80 seconds, 1:12.09 and 1:24.29 but was unable to hold off the winner approaching the wire.

"My horse ran a great race but the other horse just came and got him," said James Graham, who rode the runner-up.

Scotus rallied from mid-pack to get up for third.

"My horse ran good. I'm happy," said Scotus' rider Manoel Cruz.  "He saved ground, he doesn't have much speed. I followed the right horses, and turning for home I had big room. He gave the best he could for me."

The Hanshin Cup was the first win in three starts this year for Havelock who finished third in this race last year before going on to capture the $100,000 Arlington Sprint and the Grade II Play the King on the turf.  The homebred 5-year-old earned $86,400 for the victory to push his bankroll to $361,129.

He paid $19.60, $8 and $4.40.  Lonesome Street returned $3.40 and $2.60.  Scotus paid $3.20.

San Antone, Taptowne, Glean of Hope, Ioya Bigtime, Fast Alex and Free Fighter completed the order of finish.
