PACHATTACK COMING BACK FOR
"Love me two times, girl – one for tomorrow, one just for today." With apologies to The Doors, no decision will be made on Flaxman Holdings' 2012 Arlington Matron winner Pachattack's status for the 2012 Matron renewal May 26 until at least 24 hours after her five-furlong May 19 breeze in l:02.20 at Maryland's Fair Hill training center.
"She breezed for us this morning at Fair Hill," said trainer Graham Motion's stable manager Jane Buchanan on Preakness Day, "but Graham wants to see how she comes out of it tomorrow morning before he makes a decision about coming back to Arlington next weekend."
Will the popular chestnut mare get the chance to join W. C. Hobson's Shine O'Night in the early '40s, Calumet Farm's Real Delight from the early '50s, Harbor View Farm's Swinging Mood from the mid-'60s and Petre and Vodanovich's Sixty Sails from the mid-70s as the fifth mare to win back-to-back renewals of the Grade III Arlington Matron? Inquiring minds may want to know, but they'll probably have to wait until at least Sunday to find out.
The daughter of Pulpit, although Kentucky-bred, had spent her entire racing career in
Pachattack made amends for that local defeat by returning to Chicago last year to win the Arlington Matron over the Polytrack, finished a close second in Saratoga's Grade I Personal Ensign, had narrow defeat when runner-up in Keeneland's Grade I Spinster over Polytrack and then was a contentious third in Churchill's Grade I Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic Nov. 4.
So far, Pachattack has made one start as a 6-year-old, winning Keeneland's Grade I Doubledogdare Stakes over Polytrack while defeating Five D Thoroughbreds and Wind River Stable's runner-up Kathmanblu and Tracy Farmer's third-place finisher La Gran Bailadora.
Both are expected for the Arlington Matron, as are Maple Lane Farm's Ariana D, Earle Macke's Clarinet, Olympia Star's Hemera and Green Lantern Stables'
Stone Farm et al.'s 2010 Arlington Oaks winner Upperline is being considered for both the Arlington Matron and
Thad Ackel's Mop Head, a winner of his last two straight, is now expected to be trainer Mike Stidham's candidate for the $125,000 Arlington Classic May 26.
Stidham, who has saddled the winners of the last two Arlington Classics, had originally named Terry Hamilton's Hammers Terror as his preferred candidate for this year's running, but that colt is entered in a race on Pimlico's Preakness Day program.
Heider Family Stables and Michael Dahir's Monastic, fourth in Keeneland's Grade III Transylvania Stakes at last asking April 7, is now being considered for the Arlington Classic, as are Gold Mark Farm's Monarchic, a late nomination to the Classic; Ashbrook Farm's Southern Parkway, who stumbled and lost the rider at the gate in a race at Churchill Downs Friday; Blushu Stable and Summergrove Farm's Street Serenade, a Street Sense colt who broke his maiden at Keeneland April 14 on Blue Grass Day; and Kendel Stanlee and Richard Schultz's North of Never, a Tony Granitz trainee who closed to finish third beaten a half-length for the win in his last race on the grass at Hawthorne April 29.
