“Horses in Cinema A Celebration of the Preakness!” Gallops Into The American Film Institute Silver Theatre And Cultural Center May 12 through 17

BALTIMORE, 04-30-12---The Maryland Jockey Club proudly launches “Horses in Cinema”,  a film series featuring eight horse-powered films sure to delight the equestrian community and film lovers alike. All films will screen at the AFI Silver Theatre in Downtown Silver Spring, MD from May 12-17.  On the eve of the 137th running of the famed Preakness Stakes, middle jewel of thoroughbred horse racing’s Triple Crown, Saturday, May 19 at Pimlico Race Course, the series will showcase the beauty and drama of the horse.

“We are honored and delighted that the AFI is hosting this classic series of films that truly capture our love affair with this magnificent animal,” said Tom Chuckas, President and COO of the Maryland Jockey Club. “Maryland’s fascination with horses touches four centuries, beginning with the establishment of the Maryland Jockey Club in 1743, North America’s oldest sporting organization. Historic Pimlico is second only to Saratoga in years, opening its doors in 1870, with the Preakness premiering in 1873. Today, over 80,000 horses and 17,000 jobs make our equestrian community a multimillion dollar industry.”

“From motion picture pioneer Eadweard Muybridge’s famous experimental pictures of horses in motion through recent biopics of champion racehorses, riders and trainers, the movies have thrilled to the beauty, power and grace of horses.  This series will feature some of the very best in the genre,” said Todd Hitchcock AFI Silver’s Director of Programming.

The series kicks off with a showing of the family favorite MISTY, the story of the Chincoteague ponies. The free showing is sponsored by the Maryland Horse Industry Board and dedicated to anyone who ever wanted a pony.

Other featured films include NATIONAL VELVET; THE RED PONY; THE BLACK STALLION; THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER; WILD HEARTS CAN’T BE BROKEN and HILDAGO.
