INCREASES IN ATTENDANCE, HANDLE, AND A RECORD PICK 4 POOL HIGHLIGHT WOOD MEMORIAL DAY

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – On-track and all-sources handle showed increases on Wood Memorial Day at Aqueduct Racetrack, which featured victories by Gemologist in the Grade 1 Resorts World Casino New York City Wood Memorial, Jackson Bend in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap, Trinniberg in the Grade 3 Bay Shore, and Broadway’s Alibi in the Grade 3 Comely.

Bettors wagered $820,938 into the $500,000 Guaranteed All Graded Stakes Pick 4, the highest Pick 4 pool ever at Aqueduct. The winning combination returned $181.50 for a $2 wager.

On-track handle was $2,710,451, up 12.5 percent from last year’s on-track total of $2,408,711. An additional $212,009 was wagered at the Belmont Café simulcast center, down 24.6 percent from the $281,343 wagered at the Belmont Café last year on Wood Memorial Day.

All-sources handle on NYRA races was $17,951,964, up 8.4 percent from last year’s figure of $16,566,255.

This year’s attendance of 12,514 was a 3 percent increase from last year’s attendance of 12,144.

Wood Memorial Day featured 11 races this year, the same as Wood Memorial Day last year. This year’s card had 104 betting interests, compared to 103 betting interests last year.

“It was a terrific day at Aqueduct Racetrack, highlighted by Gemologist stamping himself as a leading Kentucky Derby contender with an impressive victory in the Resorts World Casino New York City Wood Memorial and Jackson Bend winning one of the most contentious ever editions of the Carter Handicap” said NYRA President and CEO Charles Hayward. “The strong handle trends that we have been experiencing this year continued today as our customers responded very positively to the excellent card put together by our racing office.”
