D DAY DOMINATES IN SHINE AGAIN STAKES
BALTIMORE, 04-02-11---Samuel F. Cronk’s D Day ran by the pacesetters and drew away to a handy score in the opening weekend feature at Pimlico Race Course, the $50,000 Shine Again Stakes for fillies and mares.
Craftily ridden by Jeremy Rose, the 6-year-old launched her bid around the far turn in the 1/16th mile test, coming off the rail to swing widest into the stretch before blowing past speedsters Lily Quatorze and Trez to win in hand by 4-3/4 lengths. 40-1 longshot Grandiloquent came along late to edge out Amelia’s Brio for second.
The winner, who is trained by her owner, paid $6.20. The daughter of Polish Miner, who had not won on the main track since July 2008, was making her first start since December.
“It was pretty the way the race was being drawn up,” Rose said. “She was ready after the long layoff and we got a perfect trip. I wanted to save something for the stretch coming off that long layoff. You never know how tired she was going to get. She actually got really tired, which makes sense, but it shows you how classy she is.”
Rose, who won the 2009 Pimlico riding title, turned 32 yesterday. He has three wins from six mounts in the first two days of the spring meeting.
D Day, who is Maryland Million eligible, improved her record to five wins and 13 in the money finishes in 22 career starts with earnings of $160,066. She was winless in eight starts last year and had not visited the winners’ circle since January 2009 when she won on the turf at Tampa Bay Downs.
Jim Cronk, assistant trainer and son of the owner, said, “We’ve known this bloodline. This filly, the races that she ran at Delaware last year, could have been graded stakes. She ran some monster races against some better horses.”
Other activities Saturday included the third annual Chili Cook-Off, sanctioned by the International Chili Society, and music in-between races by local sensation Dean Crawford.
