BREATHOFFRESHHEIR RESOLUTE IN RUTHLESS VICTORY
By Jenny Kellner
Prompted through an opening half-mile in 47.13 by longshot Nashi and Sweet Susan, Breathoffreshheir began edging clear as the field of five 3-year-old fillies straightened for home and crossed under the wire 3 ¾ lengths in front of the favorite.
Her winning time for the six furlongs was 1:11.30 over the fast inner track. An objection by the rider of third-place finisher Sweet Susan against the winner for interference near the quarter-pole was dismissed.
"Today, she just guided me around there," said winning jockey Carlos Marquez, Jr. of Breathoffreshheir "She was much the best."
The victory was the third in four starts for the homebred daughter of Wildcat Heir, who in her previous start won the Jersey Juvenile at
"We put the blinkers on her, but she still plays around when she gets in front like that," said trainer Ben Perkins, Jr., who trains Breathoffreshheir for Everett Novak's New Farm "We're not sure what's next for her she's had four races right in a row now, so maybe we'll keep her here for one more, then give her a little break."
The second choice at 2-1, Breathoffreshheir returned $6.90 for a $2 win wager and with the winner's purse of $39,000 has now earned $144,730.
Status Pending, who closed from last, was 1 ¼ lengths in front of Sweet Susan, with Nashi and Flying Train completing the order of finish.
