LILY QUATORZE WINS OPENING DAY FEATURE
LAUREL, MD. 01-01-11---Lily Quatorze prepped for a possible run in the Nellie Morse Stakes on Jan. 22 with a dominating wire-to-wire victory in the feature on opening day of the 2011 Laurel Park winter meeting.
The daughter of 1996 Preakness winner Louis Quatorze finished first for the second consecutive start, winning by 8 1/4 lengths and completing the one-mile distance in 1:38.69. She paid $3.20.
Trainer Taryn Tagg credited jockey Christopher Ho for the improvement. Before the apprentice had the riding assignment, the filly was one-for-nine. Since, Nov. 20 the duo has won two-of-three with a promising second place performance.
RUSSELL RETURNS TO THE WINNERS’ CIRCLE
Sheldon Russell, who has been sidelined with broken ribs since Oct. 30, made a triumphant return with a victory in the Saturday finale aboard Lady In The Money ($4.60) for trainer Tim Keefe. The 23-year-old also had a second place finish with longshot Stormin Jerry (race 3) and teamed up with Northpoint Costas for a fourth place finish (race 6).
“It was a bad time to get hurt because it can be difficult to get going in the winter but we have been working hard in the morning,” said Russell, who captured the 2007 Laurel fall meet and has battled injuries during his four-year career. “It was a good day. We rode three live horses for trainers we had been riding for before the injury.”
