SIX SET FOR SATURDAY’S MARYLAND JUVENILE FILLY CHAMPIONSHIP
LAUREL, MD. 12-10-10---Six two-year-old fillies are entered in tomorrow’s $50,000 Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship at Laurel Park.
Training in New York and the winner of her maiden start, Indian Tale (7-5) will be ridden by Harry Vega for the first time in the 7-1/2 furlong test. A winner by 4-1/2 lengths in her debut at Aqueduct, the Carlos Martin trainee drew the inside post.
Maiden winner Love’s Reason (9-5), who finished third in the Maryland Million Lassie, is second choice on the morning line. Trained by Rodney Jenkins, the Not for Love filly will carry Travis Dunkelberger.
Fitzhugh LLC’s Side by Side (9-2), who is two-for-two for trainer Richard Small, will have leading rider Forest Boyce at the controls. The Include filly won both her starts at Laurel, Nov. 13 and Dec. 1.
“She is a nice filly,” Small said. “The only question will be the quick turnaround but she came out of that race in fine shape.”
Fitzhugh (Robert Meyerhoff), Small and Boyce teamed up to win two races on Friday’s card.
Hamilton Smith will saddle Congaree Princess (8-1), who has won once in five starts. She left the maiden ranks in her most recent appearance here on Nov. 5 under Erick Rodriguez, who retains the mount.
Oriental Cruise (12-1) will be wearing blinkers for the first time on Saturday and will carry Mario Pino for the first time. The Larry Murray filly drilled a five-furlong bullet workout last Saturday in anticipation of this start.
Ferris Allen saddles Malibu Beach Bunny (12-1), who is winless in two starts. Eric Camacho has ridden the Malibu Moon filly to third and second place finishes in her two outings at Laurel, finishing behind Oriental Cruise (Oct. 28) and Side by Side (Nov. 13).
Thirty-one lucky fans will be selected throughout the afternoon to choose a wrapped package from the Maryland Jockey Club giving tree. Gifts include high definition televisions, laptop computers, digital cameras and a Wii Sports Resort system.
LAKE STILL TWO SHY OF 5,000
Scott Lake remained two wins shy of becoming the sixth trainer to reach 5,000 wins when Anthony the Tiger finished off the board in Friday’s 9th race at Laurel Park. Lake has a horse running at Penn National tonight.
The 45-year-old has four chances to reach the milestone tomorrow, including two at Laurel Park. He has an even money entry of Radio Relay and Good General in the sixth race and one race later will saddle Nervous Marvin, a 5-2 morning line favorite.
The Lake barn also has two scheduled starters Saturday afternoon at Philadelphia Park.
