GLEAMING STREAK CONTINUES, 4TH STRAIGHT WIN AT REMINGTON
OKLAHOMA CITY – The talented 3-year-old filly Gleaming stepped away from her Oklahoma-bred comfort zone on Wednesday at Remington Park to face open company rivals in a $32,260 allowance event for fillies and mares, three and older. She managed her fourth consecutive win, scoring by three-quarters of a length in the six-furlong event.
Owned by the Dallas partnership of Wayne Sanders and Larry Hirsch, Gleaming is trained by Bret Calhoun and was ridden by jockey Ramsey Zimmerman. She ran just off the lead until leaving the lone turn of the race, making her move at the top of the stretch. Gleaming had to fend off another Oklahoma-bred filly as Miss Natalie tried to catch her early in the stretch but could not match strides. Gleaming crossed the finish in 1:10.59 over the fast track.
The Smart Look rallied for third, 4-1/2 lengths behind the runner-up.
Away at 2-1 odds in the wagering, Gleaming paid $6.20 to win, $3 to place and $2.80 to show. Miss Natalie, the 4-5 favorite in the betting, returned $2.60 to place and $2.10 to show. The Smart Look rallied for third, 4-1/2 lengths behind the runner-up paying $5.20 to show.
A daughter of Dehere from the End Sweep mare Cupid’s Comet, Gleaming won her fourth career race with all of them taking place at Remington Park this season. The winner’s share of $19,090 moves her total earnings to $79,854.
Zimmerman posted a riding triple on Wednesday, continuing to make the battle for leading jockey close. In addition to Gleaming, he won with Little Wagon ($6.20 to win) in the opener and Lacey Officer ($9.20) in the 10th race. The latter was awarded victory after running second but eventually moving up in the placing thanks to disqualification of the winner due to interference with another rival.
Zimmerman now has 57 wins for the season, four behind leading jockey Cliff Berry who has 61 wins with three race dates remaining.
The first race each of the final three nights (Thursday thru Saturday) begins at 5:30pm. The $250,000 Springboard Mile, the top 2-year-old race of the season, is the main event on Saturday evening, the final live racing program for 2010.
