TULLOCK SCORES WITH A PAIR OF FIRST TIME STARTERS

LAUREL, MD. 11-11-10---Trainer Tim Tullock and his wife, Maryland Jockey Club assistant racing secretary Jillian Sofarelli, became parents of twin girls last month. This afternoon at Laurel Park, the conditioner visited the winners’ circle with a pair of 2-year-old first time starters, both of whom were sired by the same stallion.

In Thursday’s third race, No Easy Answer pulled away from a field of six other maidens, including 3-5 favorite Bri’s Vision to win the six-furlong test by five lengths, stopping the clock in 1:12.17. The son of Petionville paid $12.

Five races later, Regal Revenge defeated seven other maidens in front-running fashion in a final time of 1:12.77. The son of Petionville paid $8.

Both colts are both owned and bred by Everest Stables. Malcolm Franklin was aboard both winners.

“I put them in as an entry but the race split,” said Tullock after the eighth race. “The horse that ran earlier is a little more mentally advanced but I like both of them.”

Sofie Leigh and Tessa Jayne Tullock were born Oct. 15.

“I am interval sleeping,” joked Tullock. “It makes losing races a little easier to handle. A day like this you go home and you are really relaxed after a very satisfying day.”

Tullock and Franklin won the Grade 3 Tempted Stakes at Aqueduct last Saturday for 2-year-old fillies with Full Moon Blues, a daughter of Petionville.

TWIXT STAKES HEADLINES SATURDAY CARD

Veterans Day will be celebrated on Saturday when members of military get a chance to decipher a nine-race card at Laurel Park, including the $50,000 Twixt Stakes. Six Maryland-bred fillies are entered in the one mile Twixt.

Morning line favorite Catch a Thief (8-5) enters the race off a rousing half-length runner-up finish in Belmont’s Catinca Stakes. She is three for six lifetime, with two seconds. Tim Hills ships the Flatter filly from Monmouth Park and Harry Vega has the mount.

“She got into a little bit of trouble in her last start, but once clear she came running,” Hills said. “Her sire was strictly a distance horse and (Catch a Thief’s) style suggests a mile should be no problem. I’m not thrilled about running her back quickly and shipping, but she’s a tough filly and has a calm demeanor. It’s not a big concern.”

J.B. Secor holds a hot hand with Maryland Million Oaks winner Baltimore Belle (5-2), who goes for her fourth straight win on Saturday. Her win streak has included two wins on the turf and her Oaks victory on the main track. Vladimir Diaz will ride the daughter of Bowman’s Band, who has finished first or second in seven of eight starts this year.

“She came out of the Million very nice and we wanted to give her a little time to breathe,” Secor said, “but she’s maturing so much at this time of the year and she worked so well the other day that we’re looking forward to trying her again at this distance on the dirt.”

Secor ranks sixth in the trainer standings during the fall meeting, with nine wins from 40 starters.

Malibu Moon Dance (4-1) has finished second and sixth in her past two starts, both against stakes company. Mike Trombetta will use Julian Pimentel on the Malibu Moon filly, who won three of her first five races before trying stakes.

Of the remaining entrees, Squabble (6-1) and Miss Speak (8-1) finished behind Baltimore Belle in the Maryland Million Oaks.

Brave as a Lion (12-1) won an allowance race here on Oct. 11, her only score of the year.

Military Day means free admission, as well as food and drink specials for those still active or retired. Central Maryland is replete with service installations and facilities, all within easy distance of Laurel Park.
