GREEN DIGGER STEALS FEATURE, LEFT ALONE ON THE LEAD TO WIN
OKLAHOMA CITY – The 2010 Remington Park Thoroughbred Season moved into November on Wednesday night and Green Digger stole the first feature of the month. The preferred front-runner led every step of the one-mile $30,850 main event in going on to win by 3-1/4 lengths.
Owned by B.E. Howerter of Coffeyville, Kan. and trained by Kari Craddock, Green Digger was ridden with confidence and precision on the lead by Alex Birzer. Together, horse and jockey went to the front of the field of seven to set fractions of :23.87 for the quarter-mile, :48,76 for the half-mile and 1:13.71 for six furlongs. No other rivals chose to challenge the 4-year-old gelding that has never been passed when taking a lead into the stretch in his career.
J J’s Indy, winner of the Oklahoma Classic on Oct. 22 managed to make a rally into second after spurning any opportunity to battle for the lead. The late-running Holiday Buzz gained into third but could get no closer than 4-1/4 lengths to the winner who crossed the finish in 1:38.88 over a fast track.
Away at 13-1 odds, Green Digger paid $28 to win, $9.80 to place and $5.60 to show. J J’s Indy returned $5.40 to place and $3.80 to show. Holiday Buzz paid $2.80 to show.
The exacta (Nos.5-2) paid $197.80 with the quinella (2-5) paying $122. The trifecta (5-2-3) paid $480.40 with the superfecta (5-2-3-7) returning $1,163.80.
Raven Hawk was the wagering favorite at 7-5 odds, running fourth.
The win was the sixth from 20 career starts for Green Digger, a Kentucky-bred gelding by Jade Hunter from the Rahy mare Flandin. He won his second consecutive Remington Park event while earning $17,610 to push his overall bankroll to $67,688.
