GAZELLE (G1) QUOTES

Cindy Jones, winning trainer of favored No Such Word (No. 8): “That was the way we planned it, to win, absolutely! She had been training so awesome into this race. The last race at Remington, Larry said she didn’t get out of a fast gallop and came out of the race so good. It looked like she was galloping down the backside and when he asked her to go, it was all over. This filly has just gotten better and better all year.”

Terry Thompson, winning jockey aboard favored No Such Word (No. 8): “We knew today she’d probably lay a little closer. She puts herself where she wants to be. If there’s pace in the race, she’ll be off it, and if not, she’ll be on it. [The Remington Park Oaks] was going to be our last race for the year and she got a lower number out of it, but what people don’t realize that I just let her gallop around there. That’s why we pointed for this one. The next day she was tearing the barn down, and Cindy did a good job of getting her ready.”

Todd Pletcher, trainer of runner-up Awesome Maria (No. 1): “I thought she ran well. It looks like we were just second-best on the day, but it was a good effort.”

John Velazquez, rider of runner-up Awesome Maria (No. 1): “I’m very proud of her. I put her on the lead and she kept fighting. The other horse was just a little better. If she can focus a little more, she’ll be OK.”
