DIFFERENT STRATEGY CASHES IN FOR TAOS CANYON
OKLAHOMA CITY – A last to first move executed by Taos Canyon in Thursday’s $28,500 allowance feature at Remington Park resulted in a 1-3/4 length victory by the gray going six furlongs.
Owned by Whippoorwill Farm of Kansas City and trained by John Hall, Taos Canyon displayed a form reversal run under jockey Luis Quinonez. In a field of eight with most of the contestants preferring to battle for the lead, Quinonez and Taos Canyon settled back in last for the first half-mile of the six-furlong sprint before beginning a move at the top of the stretch. At one point, Taos Canyon was 15 lengths behind.
Taos Canyon quickly picked off rivals once he straightened away and made the lead in the final sixteenth of a mile before pulling away to victory. It was the first time in his fledgling four-race career that he had passed horses in the stretch in any of his races. A Kentucky-bred gelding, Taos Canyon crossed the finish in 1:11.07 over a fast track.
Edplicit made a rally into second with Meadowlake Red another 3-1/2 lengths back in third.
At 9-1 odds, Taos Canyon paid $21.80 to win, $9.20 to place and $5.20 to show. Edplicit returned $4 to place and $2.80 to show. Meadowlake Red paid $9.60 to show.
Firm Resolve was the wagering favorite in the race at 2-1 odds, finishing fifth.
Taos Canyon is by Royal Academy from the Runaway Groom mare Blue Lupin. He won his second career race and scored his first victory in Oklahoma City. The winner’s check of $16,965 moves the lifetime earnings for Taos Canyon to $37,230.
