THE CAT WHO PULLS UPSET WITH FRONT-END EFFORT
OKLAHOMA CITY – The Cat Who took advantage of a short field, moving to the front of the group of five older fillies and mares in Thursday’s $39,350 allowance feature at Remington Park. She was never threatened in winning by 1-3/4 lengths, leading the entire mile over a firm turf course.
Owned by Tommy Joe Hoyt of Sumner, Texas and trained by Brent Davidson, jockey Luis Quinonez put the 4-year-old filly on the front immediately from the start and established a pace that allowed her enough run at the end to prevail. The Texas-bred managed a quarter-mile in :24.33, the half-mile in :48.60 and three-quarters of a mile in 1:12.88.
The Cat Who’s effort held heavy 4-5 wagering favorite Skedee at bay as she settled for second. The winner of the Oklahoma Classics Filly & Mare Turf last month, Skedee ran third for the first six furlongs of the race, stuck on the rail behind the winner and hemmed in by others until the end of the second turn.
In the lane, Skedee started to roll but had no answer to the final kick of the winner who crossed the finish in 1:37.53.

Overlooked in the wagering at 6-1 odds, The Cat Who paid $15 to win, $4.60 to place and $3.40 to show. Skedee paid $3 to place and $2.10 to show. Joy’s Paradise ran second until late in the stretch, settling for third, paying $4.20 to show.
The win was the fifth from 26 career attempts for The Cat Who, a daughter of Magic Cat from the Rare Brick mare Rare Lace. She won for the first time in three Remington Park attempts, all this season, and earned $22,800 for the triumph. The Cat Who now boasts a career bankroll of $188,841.
The win aboard The Cat Who was the third of the evening for Quinonez. He also posted victories with Rizzi Money ($26.20 to win) in the third race and Waterloo Slew ($12.40) in the seventh.
The triple for Quinonez gives him 33 wins for the season, moving him into fourth place in the standings, 13 behind the leader Cliff Berry who has 46 wins.
The Remington Park Thoroughbred Season continues Friday and Saturday with the first race each night at 6:30pm. The $50,000 Oklahoma Stallion Stakes for 2-year-old Oklahoma-breds headline the Saturday night program.
