CALEB’S POSSE WINS CLEVER TREVOR STAKES FOR THE CONNECTIONS OF CLEVER TREVOR
OKLAHOMA CITY – The Remington Park 2-year-old stakes series continued Saturday night with the $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes. The event was won by Caleb’s Posse who competed for the same owner and trainer that had so much success with the race’s namesake.
Owned by Don McNeill of McNeill Stables in Edmond, Okla. and trained by Donnie Von Hemel, Caleb’s Posse rolled to a clear victory by 5-1/2 lengths under jockey Quincy Hamilton. The talented 2-year-old colt covered the seven-furlongs in a 1:22.22 over a fast track.
“It was just a pleasure of a ride, he broke sharply and took me exactly where I wanted to be down the backstretch,” Hamilton said about his winning trip. “We were a little wide but I wasn’t concerned especially when he gave me his powerful move once he switched leads.”
McNeill and Von Hemel had tremendous success from 1988-1992 with Clever Trevor as he won the first Oklahoma Derby in 1989 and many graded stakes events through a career that saw him win 15 races with earnings of $1,388,392.
Caleb’s Posse may be on track to a sharp career as well, adding the Clever Trevor Stakes to his lightly-raced resume of three victories from five starts. Prior to winning his Remington Park debut, Caleb’s Posse finished third in the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Futurity. This was his first start over a main track comprised of natural materials, where the first four attempts this year took place at Arlington Park in Chicago which uses an artificial surface.
“Actually I think we found out today that he’s probably a better dirt horse than he is a polytrack horse,” Von Hemel said about Caleb’s Posse moving to a regular main track. “The horse was doing well into the race and it’s a pleasure to be standing here with the McNeill’s again at Remington Park.”
A Kentucky-bred son of Posse from the Slewacide mare Abbey’s Missy, Caleb’s Posse sat just off the pace in the early stages of the Clever Trevor. As the field of 10 made their way into the lone turn, the winner started his move and emerged from the bend in front and on his way to victory.
Grant Jack rallied behind Caleb’s Posse to gain second while Chipshot ran evenly in third throughout the race, finishing 4-3/4 lengths behind the runner-up at the line.
Away at 5-2 odds, Caleb’s Posse paid $7.60 to win, $4 to place and $2.60 to show. Grant Jack returned $6.80 to place and $2.40 to show. Chipshot paid $2.40 to show as the beaten even-money favorite.
The winner’s share of $60,000 in the Clever Trevor moves Caleb’s Posse’s total earnings to $122,470.
The Remington Park 2-year-old stakes series now moves to the finale on Dec. 11, the $250,000 Springboard Mile, the richest race of the season for the first-year athletes.
The Remington Park Thoroughbred Season resumes Wednesday thru Saturday, Nov. 10-13, at 6:30pm each night.
