VAN NISTELROOY GAL SETS REMINGTON RECORD FOR HIGHEST WIN PAYOFF
OKLAHOMA CITY – Crossfirehurricane, the even-money wagering favorite, was defeated by just a head in Thursday’s fifth race at Remington Park, a $7,500-level claiming event at six furlongs. The victor was on the other end of the wagering spectrum, setting a new record for a win payoff in Oklahoma City.
Van Nistelrooy Gal passed Crossfirehurricane late in the stretch and held on for the upset at odds of 141-1. A $2 win wager was worth $284.60, setting a new Remington Park record. The big payoff topped the old local standard of $254.20 set on Oct. 28, 2001 when Cherokee County won a $7,500-level claiming event.
Owned by Halt Thoroughbred Inc. of Edwards, Mo., Van Nistelrooy Gal is trained by Stacy Barnes and was ridden by Benny Landeros. She crossed the finish line in 1:12.67 over a fast track.
Van Nistelrooy Gal paid $284.60 to win, $48 to place and $14.80 to show. Crossfirehurricane returned $3.40 to place and $2.60 to show. Mimi’s Reward was up for third, three-quarters of a length behind the runner-up, paying $3.40 to show.
The exacta (Nos.4-3) paid $755.60 with the quinella (3-4) returning $206.60. The trifecta (4-3-11) returned $5,173. Speedy Butterfly was up for fourth as a 25-1 long shot to help boost the 10-cent superfecta (4-3-11-5) to $2,366.94.
The victory was the second from 18 career attempts for Van Nistelrooy Gal, a Kentucky-bred 5-year-old mare by Van Nistelrooy from the French Deputy mare Cathy’s Jewels. It was her first win in two attempts at Remington Park as she earned $5,295 to push her career money to $38,039.
The Remington Park racing week continues with the $1.1 million Oklahoma Classics program of rich stakes events for eligible Oklahoma-breds on Friday night, led by the $175,000 Classic presented by the Chickasaw Nation. The first race of 10 will leave the starting gate at 6:30pm.
