RESILIENT SOONER RED WINS IN FIRST ATTEMPT OVER A MILE

OKLAHOMA CITY – Remington Park is now ready for Sunday’s Oklahoma Derby Day program after wrapping up the derby eve card on Saturday night. The featured $33,200 allowance event for Oklahoma-breds at 1 mile-70 yards went to Sooner Red who had enough to win a protracted speed duel and then hold off late runners to score.

Owned and trained by Brent Davidson of Grant, Okla., Sooner Red had Benny Landeros aboard. Away sharply from the starting gate, Sooner Red immediately set his sight on the lead in his first-ever race going more than a sprinting distance. Tigger the Tiger would not let Sooner Red have the advantage along and fought with him for the front well into the stretch drive.

After holding a slight advantage over a pestering Tigger the Tiger with a half-mile remaining, Sooner Red allowed his rival to have the lead. Tigger the Tiger managed to open up a 3-1/2 length lead as the field of seven turned for home. At that point, Landeros asked Sooner Red to go and the 3-year-old chestnut gelding responded affirmatively.

Sooner Red managed to catch a tiring Tigger the Tiger in late stretch, going on to victory in 1:43.96 over a fast track as the 9-5 wagering favorite. Land Run rallied for second with Concerned Okie another half-length behind in third. Tigger the Tiger faded to fourth.

Sooner Red paid $5.60 to win, $3.80 to place and $2.60 to show. Land Run returned $3.60 to place and $2.60 to show. Concerned Okie paid $2.40 to show.

The second career win from five attempts and the first Remington Park victory for Sooner Red was worth $19,360. A 3-year-old gelding by Ecton Park from the Atticus mare Toysintheatticus, Sooner Red has now amassed $44,372 overall.

Remington Park is set for the state’s biggest Thoroughbred race and a superb undercard on Sunday as the $400,000 Oklahoma Derby is presented. Also on the program: the $200,000 Remington Park Oaks, the $150,000 Remington Green Stakes, the $50,000 E.L. Gaylord Memorial Stakes and the $50,000 Flashy Lady Stakes.

Remington Park opens at 10am for Oklahoma Derby Day on the lone Sunday afternoon of racing this season. The first of 10 stellar races gets underway at 1:30pm.
