PREMIER EDGE SCORES THIRD CONSECUTIVE IMPRESSIVE WIN
OKLAHOMA CITY – Premier Edge proved much the best in picking off her third straight win of the Remington Park season in Wednesday’s $26,500 optional claiming feature.
Owned and trained by Steve Asmussen of Arlington, Texas and ridden by Aaron Gryder, Premier Edge was the ultra-heavy wagering favorite at 1-5 odds based on her two prior races where she romped by 6-3/4 lengths and nine lengths. Both events were low-end starter allowances but Premier Edge had no problem moving up to the $20,000 claiming level Wednesday.
Tracking the leader She’s On Her Way through the first six furlongs of the 1 mile-70 yard race, Premier Edge tugged Gryder alongside the pace-setter with a quarter mile remaining. At the top of the stretch, Gryder allowed the filly her run and she easily moved clear of rivals, striding out beautifully to win by 3-1/2 lengths in 1:43.53 over a fast track.
She’s On Her Way held second with Velvet Hammer getting up for third.
Premier Edge paid $2.40 to win, $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show. She’s On Her Way returned $10.60 to place and $4.20 to show. Velvet Hammer paid $3.40 to show.
The score was the seventh from 20 career starts for Premier Edge, a 4-year-old filly by The Cliff’s Edge from the Premiership mare Premierjane. Her third win this season equals all of her Remington Park triumphs. The winner’s check of $15,855 moves her lifetime earnings to $85,868.
The Premier Edge win as an owner moves Asmussen into a tie for the lead in the standings with eight as he shares the top with Poindexter Thoroughbreds of Springfield, Mo.
Asmussen is already at the top of the trainer standings with 32 victories, 12 ahead of Bret Calhoun who is second with 20.
The Remington Park racing week continues with racing Thursday thru Saturday at 6:30pm. The $1.1 million Oklahoma Classics program of rich stakes event for eligible Oklahoma-breds takes place Friday night.
