BOYCE REGAINS THE LEAD IN THE RIDER STANDINGS

LAUREL, MD. 10-23-10---Apprentice rider Forest Boyce won seven races this week, including a pair Saturday afternoon, to regain the top spot in the Laurel Park jockey standings. After 25 live racing days, the 26-year-old leads Sheldon Russell 29-26. Russell held or shared the lead from Oct. 8-21.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” said Boyce, of the see-saw battle. “I am glad it is Sheldon because he is such a good rider and a terrific person.”

Boyce, who won the Laurel summer stand title, scored aboard first-time starter April’s Dixie Bell ($6.60) in the third race for leading trainer Ferris Allen. The Garrison Forest School and Maryland Institute College of Art graduate scored in the ninth race with turf specialist Colony Club ($5.80). It was Boyce’s 14th winner on the turf during the fall meeting.

Russell, who captured the 2008 Laurel fall riding title, began October with wins on 10 consecutive cards.

Julian Pimentel and Eric Camacho are tied for third in the standings with 16 victories.

Allen leads John Rigattieri by three trips to the winners’ circle (11-8) in the trainer standings. Dale Capuano, Dickie Small and Hamilton Smith have each saddled seven winners.
