KELSO (G2) QUOTES
James Bond, winning trainer of Tizway (No. 4): “All in all, I couldn’t be happier. He did everything the way he was supposed to. When I get him right, he shows up. If he gets beat, it’s my fault. His last two works at
Rajiv Maragh, winning jockey aboard Tizway (No. 4): “It was definitely a well-deserved win for him. He’s always been running against some of the best older horses all over and to finally win like this was very good for him. I definitely wanted to get my horse involved because he seems to run better that way, and when I got to the middle of the turn I felt like still had a lot of horse left. Once I called on him in the stretch he just kicked on and finished up powerfully to the wire – I had to really pull on him to get him pulled up. Mr. Bond had him ready to go today.”
Rick Mettee, assistant to Saeed bin Suroor, trainer of beaten favorite Regal Ransom (No. 8): “He was never going well in the race. It’s really odd to see a horse train that well and run that badly. He really trained so well here and it’s hard to just see him back up like that because he’s such a hard-trying horse. [Jockey Alan Garcia] said he was traveling great until about midway around the turn and that he was empty as soon as Alan asked him. That is just so unlike him. You certainly wouldn’t go to the Breeders’ Cup off a race like that. We’ll have to go back to the drawing board and see how he comes out of the race before we make any plans. I would think, from just talking to Saeed, that the Breeders’ Cup is out of the question.”
Alan Garcia, jockey aboard beaten favorite Regal Ransom (No. 8): “I don’t think he has an excuse. He was in the right position, but when I needed him to run he wasn’t there and the other horse just had more gas than me.”
