OKLAHOMA DERBY DAY CONTINUES TO GROW AT REMINGTON PARK, ATTENDANCE AND WAGERING INCREASE

OKLAHOMA CITY – The lone Sunday afternoon of the 2010 Thoroughbred Season at Remington Park turned out to be a spectacular Oklahoma Derby Day as 18,000 turned out to watch Pleasant Prince triumph.

Owned by Kenneth & Sarah Ramsey of Nicholasville, Ky. and trained by Wesley Ward, Pleasant Prince was ridden by one of the nation’s top jockeys in Joel Rosario. Pleasant Prince will leave Remington Park today, bound to return to his Kentucky home-base where he will prepare for the upcoming Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6.

Final numbers are in and the returns are positive for Oklahoma Derby Day compared to last year. The attendance of 18,611 was up 16.6% over the crowd here for the 2009 Oklahoma Derby.

An extraordinary racing program featuring the derby, the $200,000 Remington Park Oaks, the $150,000 Remington Green Stakes and more with top-flight horsemen sending first-class horses to Oklahoma City was a significant factor in creating a bigger day. Hall of Fame trainers Bob Baffert and Neil Drysdale along with multiple Eclipse Award-winning trainers Steve Asmussen and Todd Pletcher, all sent horses to Remington Park to compete in the biggest races.

The major league horsemen and horses combined with an appearance by Hall of Fame jockey Ron Turcotte and former jockey turned actor Otto Thorwarth, who plays Turcotte in the Disney release Secretariat, meant a larger day overall.

“When you have Hall of Fame and Eclipse Award winning horsemen, sending some of their best horses to compete on Oklahoma Derby Day, with many of the nation’s top jockeys coming here to ride those athletes, people will take notice,” said Remington Park president and general manager Scott Wells. “We combined a tremendous racing card with a festive atmosphere featuring racing legends and movie stars to create an afternoon of sports and entertainment that the people of Oklahoma deserve.”

On-track pari-mutuel handle was $278,093 on Sunday, an increase of 56.8% over the 2009 derby day. The export handle from other racing jurisdictions on the Remington Park racing was $1,354,029, up 30.8% over last year.

Add in the four Remington Park off-track betting sites in Oklahoma and their handle of $14,667 (up 4.8%), that brought the final overall handle for the Oklahoma Derby Day program of 10 races tot $1,646,788, a healthy 22.2% higher than 2009.

The Remington Park Thoroughbred Season continues this week with racing Wednesday thru Saturday at 6:30pm. The $1.1 million Oklahoma Classics night of racing for eligible Oklahoma-bred runners is next on the big event racing calendar on Friday, Oct. 22. A total of eight stakes races featuring the top state-breds will be presented during the Oklahoma Classics.
