HARD WORKING RALLY JUST ENOUGH FOR UNOME’S KANDIMAN
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma-bred sprinters were featured Saturday at Remington Park in a $33,200 allowance event at six furlongs. Unome’s Kandiman was finally able to make his late rally work for him, getting up to a neck victory against a field of rivals all searching for their second career win.
Owned, trained and bred in Oklahoma by C.R. Trout of Edmond, Okla. and ridden by Luis Quinonez, Unome’s Kandiman had started three times this season prior to Saturday. None of the three attempts put him into the winner’s circle as he rallied each time, only to come up short in all three, even disqualified to ninth for interference once.
Saturday, Quinonez was able to move the 4-year-old gelding outside of his foes leaving the turn for the stretch, staying clear of possible contact. Running down the middle of the stretch, Unome’s Kandiman was able to collar Okie Motive in the final strides, prevailing by a neck at the finish in 1:10.89 over the fast track.
Big Cash Deal closed from well back in the field of nine to gain third, 1-3/4 lengths behind the top two. Okie Ride battled among the front-runners before fading to fourth. Skeeter Slew established a quick-enough pace for others to run down in handling the first quarter-mile in :21.68 seconds and then getting the half-mile in :44.73 seconds before faltering to finish eighth.
Favored at 2-1 odds, Unome’s Kandiman paid $6.20 to win, $3.40 to place and $3 to show. Okie Motive paid $3.40 to place and $3.20 to show. Big Cash Deal returned $6.60 to show.
A son of Unome from the Evansville Slew mare Star’s Kandi Kane, Unome’s Kandiman won his second career race from 11 attempts, scoring his first victory at Remington Park. The winner’s check of $19,270 moves his lifetime earnings to $49,032.
