HANDLE AND ATTENDANCE UP DOUBLE FIGURES ON JOCKEY CLUB GOLD CUP DAY

ELMONT, N.Y. – On a picture-perfect day at Belmont Park that saw the talented New York-bred Haynesfield provide a front-running upset in the 93rd running of the Grade 1, $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational, on-track handle and attendance easily eclipsed last year’s numbers.

All-sources handle was $18,191,317, up 19.7 percent from last year’s all-sources handle of $15,194,497. On-track handle was $2,153,130, up 31.6 percent from the $1,636,285 wagered on track last year.

This year’s attendance of 9,671 outpaced last year’s attendance of 7,000 by 38 percent.

“It was a great day of racing here at Belmont Park,” said NYRA President and CEO Charles Hayward. “Today’s five Grade 1 races featured excellent competitive fields and will lead up nicely to the Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs in November.”
