EMERGING OKLAHOMA-BRED STAR GLEAMING ROLLS AGAIN
OKLAHOMA CITY – Gleaming followed her impressive maiden-breaking performance a month ago with a solid 3-3/4 length victory in Friday’s $33,200 allowance feature for Oklahoma-bred fillies and mares going five furlongs.
Owned by the Dallas partnership of Wayne Sanders and Larry Hirsch, Gleaming is trained by Bret Calhoun. The lightly-raced 3-year-old filly was ridden by Aaron Gryder as she put away nine rivals in the quick five-furlong sprint in :57.95 seconds over a fast track.
Gleaming won despite fighting for the lead early in the race with four opponents. The five-way battle lasted until late in the lone turn when Gleaming was able to shake free of her foes, taking control with a furlong left. Tommi Tommi rallied from the back of the pack to gain second at 33-1 odds while Ginger Brick Road, one of the fillies who contested the lead with Gleaming, held on for third another 1-1/4 lengths behind the runner-up.
Away as the heavy 1-2 wagering favorite, Gleaming paid $3 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.20 to show. Tommi Tommi paid $10.40 to place and $13 to show. Ginger Brick Road returned $5.80 to show.
Winning for the second time in three career races, all of them at Remington Park, Gleaming is quickly establishing herself as a top Oklahoma-bred sprinter. A daughter of Dehere from the End Sweep mare Cupid’s Comet, Gleaming earned $19,225 Friday to move her career bankroll to $40,949.
Gleaming was one of three winners on Friday for the Calhoun barn. He also saddled maiden winners Ghost of Dubai ($5.40 to win) in the fifth race and Final Topping ($4.40) in the 10th and final race of the night.
The training triple for Calhoun gives him 20 wins for the season. He is second in the trainer standings behind Steve Asmussen who has the lead with 30 wins.
The Remington Park racing week concludes Saturday night with nine races underway at 6:30pm.
The $1.1 million Oklahoma Classics night of racing for eligible Oklahoma-bred runners is next on the big event racing calendar, in one week, on Friday, Oct. 22. A total of eight stakes races featuring the top state-breds will be presented during the Oklahoma Classics.
