FAIR GROUNDS PARTNERS WITH SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK FOR FOOD DRIVE

NEW ORLEANS (Tuesday, November 18, 2014) – Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots will partner with Second Harvest Food Bank November 21 through Thanksgiving on November 27 to collect canned goods and non-perishable food items to help provide meals for those in need throughout Southern Louisiana.

The beginning of the food drive coincides with Opening Night of the 143rd thoroughbred racing season on November 21 and runs through Thanksgiving. Collection boxes with be placed in the Fair Grounds Race Course valet lobby as well as at the 10 other off-track betting facilities throughout southeast Louisiana – a complete list of off-track betting locations can be found at www.fgno.com. Employees, friends, family, and the public are encouraged to help the effort towards a goal of a 2,000 pound food donation.

“Second Harvest does important work in reducing hunger in South Louisiana,” said Fair Grounds Track President Tim Bryant. “We are looking forward to partnering with them to do our part to give back to a community that has given us so much over the years.”

In addition to the collection efforts, Fair Grounds has donated $1,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank.

“One in six households in Louisiana are struggling with hunger. Hunger doesn’t take a holiday, many families in South Louisiana will be visiting local food pantries during the next couple of months so that they can share a special meal around the table this holiday season,” said Natalie Jayroe, President/CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank. “We are so thankful for the support from the Fair Grounds and the community especially during the holidays.”

Second Harvest Food Bank (www.no-hunger.org) is the largest anti-hunger network in South Louisiana with a mission to end hunger by providing food access, advocacy, education, and disaster response. According to Second Harvest, 1 in 6 households in Louisiana are at risk for hunger due to the rising costs of food, housing, and utilities. The organization collects 25 million pounds of food to serve 22.5 million meals to 210,000 individuals annually.
