LABOR DAY TURF SPRINT WON BY RIVER CRUISING
OKLAHOMA CITY- A warm and windy Labor Day crowd enjoyed a special afternoon of racing at Remington Park. River Cruising would enjoy victory in the holiday feature over the turf at five furlongs in a $30,000 allowance event.
Owned and trained by Steve Asmussen, River Cruising was ridden by Ramon Vazquez. The 4-year-old gelding was near the back of the field of nine, six lengths from the pace-setting Merkava, until beginning his run midway through the lone turn. Merkava tired drastically in the stretch and River Cruising angled out around him, found a lane to run and drew clear to win by 1-1/2 lengths. Bucking Thunder was trapped behind Merkava and forced to wait to find clearance, thus hindering his effort while he settled for second. Five Seasons was third.
River Cruising crossed the finish line in :57.56 seconds over the firm turf at 6-1 odds in the wagering and paid $14 to win, $6 to place and $4.60 to show. Bucking Thunder paid $6 to place and $4.40 to show. Five Seasons paid $5.40 to show. Jamisonsjester was the beaten 9-5 wagering favorite and finished fourth.
The win was the fourth from 14 career starts for River Cruising and his first at Remington Park. He is a Kentucky-bred son of Five Star Day from the Danzig mare Like A River. The winning check of $17,796 increased his lifetime earnings to $69,606.
Remington Park’s Thoroughbred Season will continue Thursday thru Saturday, Sept. 4-6, later this week with the nightly first race at 7pm.
