| | | | | Friday, August 8, 2014 Contact: Sean Morris smorris@nyrainc.com NYRA announces 2014 Belmont Fall Championship Meet stakes schedule ELMONT, N.Y. - The New York Racing Association has announced the stakes schedule for the 2014 Fall Championship meet at Belmont Park, with 42 stakes totaling $11 million, anchored by "Super Saturday" on September 27. "Super Saturday" will feature six graded stakes, including five Grade 1 races, headed by the 96th edition of the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup at 1 ¼ miles. Also on the day are the $600,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, the $600,000 Flower Bowl for turf fillies and mares, the $400,000 Beldame for fillies and mares, and the $400,000 Vosburgh for sprinters. The Grade 2, $400,000 Kelso Handicap at one mile will also be run on Super Saturday. New York Showcase Day, the marquee event for New York-breds, will again be part of the stakes schedule. Showcase Day will take place on Saturday, October 18, and will be comprised of eight stakes races restricted to New York-breds, with purses totaling $1.75 million. The premier 2-year-old races at Belmont, the Grade 1 Champagne and Grade 1 Frizette for fillies, will be run on October 4 along with the Grade 3 Hill Prince for 3-year-olds on the turf and the Temperence Hill Invitational at 1 5/8 miles. With the Grade 1 Jamaica Handicap and the Grade 1 Garden City having been moved to the inaugural Stars & Stripes Day at Belmont in July as the Belmont Derby and the Belmont Oaks, Grade 2, $500,000 Sands Point on September 13 and $500,000 Hill Prince will take their place on the fall schedule. After opening weekend, the 38-day Fall Championship will run on its traditional Wednesday-Sunday schedule, with the lone exception being Columbus Day, October 13, which will be headlined by the Punkin Pie and Pebbles.
