FAVORED ADELAIDE COMES THROUGH IN SECRETARIAT

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Aug. 16, 2014) – Derrick Smith, Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor, John Ingham, Bill Webb, John Murray and Tom Magnier's Adelaide, the 1.10-1 favorite, stalked the pace of the pacesetting Tourist, overtook that rival at the top of the stretch and held firm late despite drifting out noticeably in the stretch to win the $500,000 Grade I Secretariat Stakes for 3-year-olds at Arlington International Racecourse.

"He's the best horse in the race going into it, I just thought we would keep it simple," said winning jockey Ryan Moore, who won the Secretariat for the first time. "The horse on the lead was getting a bit of a soft hand, so didn't want to move up too early.  Adelaide just had more class than the field and got the job done."

Adelaide, an Irish-bred sophomore son of Galileo, has already raced in France, Ireland twice, England and now twice in America. The Secretariat marked his third win from six career starts, boosting his career bankroll to $697,452.

It was the third Secretariat training win for Aidan O'Brien, who previously scored in the race with Treasure Beach (2011) and Ciro (2000).

Tourist, the 2.10-1 second choice, carved out fractions of 24.97, 48.93, 1:13.54 and 1:37.94 before race winner Adelaide overtook and sealed the deal in a final clocking of 2:02.31 for 1¼ miles over firm turf. The winning margin was 1½ lengths and it was three lengths further back to 11-1 shot Sheldon in third.

"He ran well," jockey Joel Rosario said of Tourist. "I had to move a little early and the horse that won the race (Adelaide) was there with me and he got me. It was his (Tourist's) first time going a mile and a quarter and he did well."

Adelaide paid $4.20, $2.60 and $2.20. Tourist returned $3.40 and $2.60. Sheldon paid $3.60 to show.

Global View, Hightail, Divine Oath and General Jack completed the order of finish.
