BIG LONGSHOTS RULE THURSDAY CARD AT REMINGTON PARK
OKLAHOMA CITY – It was longshot night at Remington Park Thursday as a couple of big upsets took place late in the card, keying big payoffs for correct horseplayers.
Tenspeed found another gear to win his turf debut in the sixth race of the night, a $15,000-level Claiming event at one mile. Owned by Stan Wilson of Coffeyville, Kan. and trained by Kenny Nolen, Tenspeed rallied off the final turn before outlasting the front-running Cat’s A Smokin to pull clear to a one-length win. Jareth Loveberry had the ride on the 3-year-old who was ignored at 49-1 odds.
The Oklahoma-bred gelding by Aragorn (Ire) from the Here We Come mare Queena Corrina paid $100.40 to win, $22.60 to place and $8.80 to show. While impressive, the Tenspeed financial reward to correct bettors paled compared to the results in race eight.
A $35,775 Allowance event for fillies and mares at 7-1/2 furlongs over the firm turf, Onemorefastdance picked a fortunate time for her first score over the lawn.
Owned by Michael Schiesel of Tulsa, Okla. and trained by Jade Lowder, Onemorefastdance had one second-place run and a third-place effort from three turf attempts to her credit. Despite having a past preference for turf racing, the 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred filly was overlooked at 78-1 odds. Jockey Curtis Kimes guided her to a gritty three-quarter length win over Battle Tale as she awarded her backers $158.40 to win, $57.80 to place and $16 to show.
A daughter of Brego from the J.P. Brother mare I Knew You When, Onemorefastdance keyed a superfecta that paid $13,609.80 with Battle Tale second, Bringinginthelute third and Afoolsbrokenheart fourth. The rest of the superfecta finishers left the starting gate at odds of 3-1, 7-2 and 3-2 respectively.
Both of the big longshot winners were involved in the Remington Park Primetime Pick 4, a $1 multi-race wager over the final four races on the program. Due to the high-priced winners in races six and eight, the Pick 4 paid $13,492.40 to tickets with 3 out of 4 correct on the combination of 8-1-1-4.
The first full racing week of the season continues Friday and Saturday at Remington Park. The $50,000 Red Earth Stakes for Oklahoma-breds over the turf is on Friday night. The Saturday feature is the $75,000 Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Handicap, also over the turf. The first race nightly is 7pm.
