First-time starter Wonder Gal easily wins Lynbrook (NYB)

ELMONT, N.Y. - Wonder Gal made short work of her four opponents and picked up black type in her debut, running away to a 14 ½-length win in Belmont Park's $125,000 Lynbrook for New York-bred 2-year-old fillies on Sunday.

Bet down to 4-5, Wonder Goal trailed in fifth early before advancing on the far turn, taking the lead at the quarter pole, and pulling clear under a hand ride. She stopped the timer in 1:11.14 for six furlongs and returned $3.60 for a $2 win wager.

"I had been on her a few times in the morning, so I was hoping an effort like this was coming, but you never really know," said winning jockey Taylor Rice. "She's a big mare, so I just wanted to let her break and settle. I think she'll definitely be better going longer."

Leah Gyarmati trains Wonder Gal for owner Jeff Treadway, who purchased the daughter of Tiz Wonderful for $22,000 in April at the OBS Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. She has already recouped her purchase price, having earned $75,000 for her Lynbrook victory.

"There haven't been many maiden races for New York-bred fillies," said Gyarmati. "We hope she lives up to our expectations. She's young, still. She's big, but she's still young. You have to keep that in mind. There are bound to be some bumps along the way."

Gyarmati said she has no current plans for Wonder Gal's next start.

Accelebrate was second and was followed home by Saluda, Harlan's Honor, and Jiggin Witit. Jessica's Ride was scratched at the gate.
