GLOBAL VIEW SEEKS FIRM TURF IN SECRETARIAT
Glen Hill Farm’s Global View, who has been training steadily at Arlington International Racecourse since the beginning of June, is thriving as he prepares for his next start. Such could occur locally in the Grade I $500,000 Secretariat Stakes on Arlington Million Day or in California later in the summer.
“He’s doing fantastic right now,” reported Craig Bernick, president of Glen Hill Farm. “He hasn’t missed a day.”
The exceptionally bred son of Galileo has finished in the exacta in five of eight tries and was last seen finishing a disappointing seventh in the Grade I Belmont Derby Invitational at Belmont Park. The $500,000 Keeneland September 2012 purchase apparently did not enjoy the ‘good’ ground that day and would prefer stiffer ground if he is to run out of his stall on Aug. 16.
“He likes firm turf and it was good at Belmont. Last year they watered the ground too much leading up to the (International Festival of Racing) at Arlington,” Bernick explained. “He needs it firm. If it rains a lot or they water it too much again, he’ll run in the (Grade II $300,000) Del Mar Derby (on Aug. 30), instead. It’s really up to what they wind up doing. If they let it be and it doesn’t rain, he’ll run.”
| The colt has always been thought of highly by his connections. The Tom Proctor trainee won in his second career start – and first on the grass – at Santa Anita last year before taking the Grade III Generous Stakes. This year, Global View won the Grade II American Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day. “He’s not a Grade I winner yet, but we think he’s a Grade I horse,” Bernick said. “His last race wasn’t great. He got bumped a bit and (jockey) Gary (Stevens) wasn’t able to ride him much after that. I won’t take anything away from (winner Mr. Speaker), though. “(Global View) broke his maiden going 6½ furlongs down the hill at Santa Anita – and he’s definitely not a sprinter – and then won stakes at a mile and a mile and a sixteenth,” he continued. “I would say his best races are yet to come and will be at a mile and a quarter and farther.” Global View had his first work since his trip to Belmont on Monday, July 21, working four furlongs in :50.80 in a relaxed maintenance move over the Arlington turf. It was the only work at the distance that morning. He is expected to be back on the worktab on Sunday, July 27. ARLINGTON OR DEAUVILLE FOR L’AMOUR DE MA VIE Lightly race European mare L’Amour de Ma Vie is currently on the fence for the Grade I $750,000 Beverly D., according to the International Racing Bureau. The MD Bloodstock Limited-owned daughter of Dansili (sire of last year’s Beverly D. winner Dank) is entered to run in the Group I Prix Rothschild at Deauville, with the caveat of firm ground-dependency. The 5-year-old mare does not prefer cut in the turf and would reroute to Chicago if the French racecourse is too soft. Trained by Pia Brandt, the striking light gray was last seen finishing a good second in the Group II Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot – the same race Dank used en route to Arlington glory in 2013. Her most notable score was in the Group II Balanchine Stakes on Meydan’s flat, left-handed course over a 1 1/8-miles distance (a sixteenth of a mile shorter than the Beverly D.), where she defeated the highly regarded Certify and 2012 Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Flotilla. -END- |
