Pennine Ridge Quotes

Todd Pletcher, winning trainer of Gala Award (No. 2): "We talked about it in the paddock that it wouldn't be impossible that we would be on the lead. With the way it unfolded we were in a good stalking position. I was a little worried at the top of the stretch when he got bounced around a little bit, but it seemed to make him get up on the bridle, and he was pretty game."

"He really has [turned into a good turf horse]. It wasn't something we were thinking, but as soon as we tried him on the grass we could see he was, at that time, better on the turf. He has improved in his dirt training, but we're not looking to change right now."

Will the Belmont Derby be his next start? "Hopefully, yes."

John Velazquez, winning rider aboard Gala Award (No. 2): "It was a good trip. I didn't think I was going to be laying in third the first part of the race, but we inherited that and [Mr Speaker] set a pretty good pace. We were bouncing around a little bit at the quarter pole, but he put up a good fight and ended up being the winner."

Patrick Gallagher, trainer of runner-up Flamboyant (No. 1), by telephone: "Flamboyant ran good, but [Gala Award] just outran him. We'll take a look at [the Belmont Derby]. It will be tougher, but we'll definitely take a look at it."

**Note: the top two finishers in the Pennine Ridge will receive automatic invitations to the Grade 1, $1.25 million Belmont Derby Invitational on July 5. The Belmont Derby is a 1 ¼-mile turf race for 3-year-olds.
