Medal Count joins list of Belmont Stakes probables

ELMONT, N.Y. - Medal Count, a Grade 3 winner who was eighth in the Kentucky Derby, has joined the list of 3-year-olds who are probable for the Grade 1, $1.5 million Belmont Stakes on June 7.

Prior to running in the Derby, Medal Count won the Grade 3 Transylvania and was second in the Grade 1 Blue Grass over Keeneland's Polytrack in April.

"[Medal Count's] Derby was better than it looks," said Dale Romans, who trains the son of Dynaformer for Spendthrift Farm. "He should have finished third. He was going by [eventual third-place finisher] Danza when he got knocked, and he's a nice horse who belongs. And history shows it will be difficult for California Chrome."

Also expected to face Triple Crown hopeful California Chrome are Commanding Curve, Commissioner, Matterhorn, Matuszak, Ride On Curlin, Samraat, Tonalist, and Wicked Strong, according to NYRA stakes coordinator Andrew Byrnes.

Kid Cruz is possible.
