| Saturday, April 26, 2014 Contact: Jon Forbes jforbes@nyrainc.com New Hall of Famer Alex Solis returns to New York OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Jockey Alex Solis, who on Friday was announced as a member of the 2014 Hall of Fame class, resumed riding in New York on Saturday after having spent the winter at Gulfstream Park. "It's a great recognition," said Solis. "I'm very happy about everything I've been able to accomplish thanks to the horses I rode and the owners and trainers." Solis, a 50-year-old native of Panama who has won 4,986 races in his career, rode primarily in California until he brought his tack east in 2010. Since then, he has spent time competing at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course, among other tracks in the Eastern time zone. Prior to his move, Solis won several of New York's biggest races, capturing the 1997 Wood Memorial with Captain Bodgit, 2000 Gotham with Red Bullet, 2002 Manhattan with Beat Hollow, 2004 Carter and Metropolitan Handicap with Pico Central, and 2006 Acorn with Bushfire. Since relocating, Solis has registered Grade 1 wins in the 2010 Forego with Here Comes Ben, 2011 Jockey Club Gold Cup with Flat Out, and 2013 Spinaway with Sweet Reason. "I have to say [winning the Jockey Club] Gold Cup was special," said Solis when asked to name his most memorable wins in New York. "Winning the Wood Memorial with Captain Bodgit and winning the Met Mile with Pico Central also stand out." Solis, who finished second in races 1 and 4 with his two mounts on Saturday, said he plans to ride in New York before returning to Florida in the winter. -30- |
