Gregory Johansen's "Grand Mondays" selection fails to deliver

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Gregory Johansen, 55, won The New York Racing Assocation, Inc.'s (NYRA) fifth "Grand Mondays" promotion, which rewards one lucky fan with a $1,000 win wager on a horse of his or her choosing in that day's eighth race, but he failed to cash when his selection finished fourth.

Johansen - who hails from Farmingdale, N.Y. - does marketing for an internet-based company and frequently visits Aqueduct Racetrack on Mondays, when he is off from work. He decided to put his $1,000 win voucher on Irish Whisper (No. 3).

"I like her last race and the speed she has," said Johansen. "I thought she ran well off the layoff last time and should improve."

After breaking a step slowly, the chestnut daughter of Langfuhr was unable to take her preferred position on the lead, but settled comfortably near the back of the pack. Around the far turn, the 4-year old filly made a wide move and looked to be a serious threat for the win down the stretch but flattened out late to finish fourth.

"Grand Mondays" will be back again next Monday, March 10.
