Austin Anthony's "Grand Mondays" selection misses by a nose

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Austin Anthony, 59, won The New York Racing Assocation, Inc.'s (NYRA) seventh "Grand Mondays" promotion, which rewards one lucky fan with a $1,000 win wager on a horse of his or her choosing in that day's eighth race, but he failed to cash when his selection finished second by a nose.

Anthony, originally from Kingston, Jamaica, currently resides in Manhattan and proclaims himself former jockey Julie Krone's "No. 1 fan." He elected to place his $1,000 win voucher on King of Broadway (No. 5) "because I feel like a king today; it's my day."

Away well, the Bill Mott-trained King of Broadway was sent to the front by jockey Manny Esquivel through a snappy opening quarter-mile in 22.92 seconds and a half in 47.52. Going into the far turn, the 8-5 favorite, Ruthless Alley, took command and put a head in front, but King of Broadway remained undaunted by the challenge and continued to fight while in tight quarters entering the stretch. The two exchanged bumps at the top of the stretch and nothing separated them until King of Broadway opened up a narrow advantage with a furlong left. However, Ruthless Alley came on again in the last few strides to nip his game rival at the wire and deny Anthony the $4,000 windfall the colt's victory would have yielded.

"Grand Mondays" will be back again next Monday, March 17.
