NEW ORLEANS (Tuesday, February 12, 2013) – Richard, Bertram and Elaine Klein’s Good Deed, heroine of Fair Grounds’ $48,000 Letellier Memorial Stakes in 2011 as a 2-year-old, returned to her winning ways at the local oval on Fat Tuesday with a definitive one-length victory in the $75,000 Mardi Gras Stakes for older fillies and mares at six furlongs.
“She ran great,” said winning rider Shaun Bridgmohan immediately after the Mardi Gras. “I thought she’d run well today because she’s been training tremendously. (Trainer) Steve Margolis has done a great
Good Deed, a daughter of Broken Vow who had not run since finishing fifth in the Grade III Winning Colors Stakes at Churchill Downs last June 12, returned mutuels of $7.20, $4 and $3, toured the three-quarter mile distance in 1:11.12 after accomplishing early splits of 22:12 and 45.70 while making the pace and increased her career earnings to $201,143 with her fifth victory from nine lifetime starts.
“I worried she might have been a little rank the first part of it,” said Margolis, “but she broke so easily I wouldn’t have wanted Shaun to discourage her. I thought he rode her great.”
Martin Racing Stable and Dan and Deb Morgan’s Beat the Blues, always well placed, continued willingly late to gain the place, paying $3.40 and $2.60, while finishing a head to the good of Adele Dilschneider and Claiborne Farm’s Ire, who returned $2.60.
Racing resumes Thursday at Fair Grounds with a nine-race program beginning at 1 p.m.
