NEW ORLEANS (Thursday, January 31, 2013) – Brereton Jones’s Believe You Can, winner of the Grade I Kentucky Oaks last spring following her score in the Grade II Fair Grounds Oaks five weeks earlier, returns to the Crescent City oval Saturday to make her 2013 debut in the $75,000 Tiffany Lass Stakes against five other older fillies and mares at 1 1/16-miles.
Two-time defending Fair Grounds Oaks
Martin Racing Stable and Carl Moore Management’s Cheerleader, who is undefeated in two starts at Fair Grounds this winter, appears to be the main source of competition for Believe You Can and is pegged as the 7-2 second choice in the early Tiffany Lass line. In her most recent start Dec. 27 she was the wire-to-wire winner of an allowance and $40,000 optional claiming race for “non-winners of two other than” after winning out of her previous condition Nov. 27 here. Miguel Mena gets the mount on the Bret Calhoun trainee.
Not to be discounted in the Tiffany Lass is Coffeepot Stables’ Imposing Grace, who lost by a half-length to Cheerleader in their Dec. 27 duel but was forced to alter course that day. Trained by Wayne Catalano, Imposing Grace followed up that runner-up run with a win against similar competition Jan. 18. Jockey James Graham will be aboard at 4-1 in the line.

COR COR FAVORED OVER 7 OTHER FILLIES IN BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS CATFIGHT – Steve Ballou and Harriet Waldron’s Cor Cor, a Florida-bred Florida-based filly trained by Joan Scott, invades the Crescent City for the inaugural running of the $75,000 Battle of New Orleans Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at about 5 1/2-furlongs over the Stall-Wilson Turf Course at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
Installed as the 9-5 morning line choice in the Battle of New Orleans, Cor Cor is coming off a runner-up run in Gulfstream’s Grade III Old Hat Stakes on New Year’s Day and had won the $68,000 Sandpiper Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs a month before that.

Named to oppose Cor Cor in the Battle of New Orleans, who breaks from the rail, from the inside out with respective riders assigned are Jerry Jamgotchian’s Prettyhotprincess, Jesse Campbell; Feel the Thunder Stable and Scott Unter’s My Princess Dawn, James Graham; Bud-E-Tom Racing and Lori Culotta’s Ellyn’slittlestorm, Colby Hernandez; David Soblick’s Livin Peace, Leandro Goncalves; Ten Broeck Farm’s Sunset Time, Miguel Mena; Ike and Dawn Thrash’s Truly Marie, Brian Hernandez Jr.; and Richard, Bertram and Elaine Klein’s Gator Zone, Shaun Bridgmohan.
Gator Zone, a daughter of Sharp Humor who is trained by Steve Margolis, is pegged the 7-2 second choice in the Battle of New Orleans after breaking her maiden in her last start on Dec. 23 here.
