Oklahoma Derby Week at Remington Park

OKLAHOMA DERBY WEEK UNDERWAY, HALL OF FAME CEREMONY WEDNESDAY

 

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma Derby week is underway at Remington Park with all activity leading to the state’s top Thoroughbred race on Sunday, Sept. 30.

 

Live racing this week shifts to a Thursday thru Sunday schedule with action starting at 6:30pm on Thursday thru Saturday. The Oklahoma Derby program on Sunday begins at 1:30pm.

 

Derby morning begins with a special Sunrise at Remington at 9am. Guests are welcome to join Chris Kotulak and Dale Day on the Plaza, near the finish line, for a behind-the-scenes look at morning training. Horsemen competing in the derby and other races will also stop by for conversation and to answer questions.

 

Ladies will want to wear their best in the Oklahoma Derby Hat Contest on Sunday, Sept. 30. Attend the contest and tea on the Clubhouse Level from 2-4pm and compete for $2,000 in cash prizes over various divisions.

 

The 2012 Thoroughbred Induction Ceremony to the Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Fame takes place on Wednesday night, Sept. 26. Honored will be horses Kip Deville and Highland Ice, along with trainer Steve Asmussen, owner and breeder Don McNeill of Edmond, Okla. and executive David Vance, the first leader to guide Remington Park.

 

During racing on Thursday night, Sept. 27, the Derby Fever-All City Disco Party will begin and then continue until Midnight. Superfreak will have the musical entertainment while guests can wear their best Disco Era outfits to vie for $1,000 in prize money in the costume contest.

 

The Remington Park 2-year-old stakes series begins on Friday, Sept. 28 with the running of the $75,000 Kip Deville Stakes. The 2-year-old stakes schedule leads to the Springboard Mile in December, the top race for juveniles this season.

 

 

Oklahoma Derby

Many of the nation’s best 3-year-olds have started their travels to Oklahoma City and Remington Park for the $400,000 Oklahoma Derby on Sunday. At least two flights are scheduled early this week to transport Thoroughbreds to compete in  the richest race of the season.

 

Others will be traveling to take part in stakes races on the undercard of the derby, including the $250,000 Remington Park Oaks, the $200,000 Remington Park Sprint Cup, the $125,000 Remington Green Stakes and the $50,000 Ladies on the Lawn Stakes.

 

 

Leading Horsemen

The battle for the top of the jockey standings remains strong with a title-favorite yet to emerge. Luis Quinonez enters Oklahoma Derby week with a slim lead of one victory over Cliff Berry, 23-22.

 

Trainer Steve Asmussen will be inducted into the Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Fame on Sept. 26. Going into this week of racing, Asmussen has 17 wins and leads the standings by seven over Karl Broberg.

 

 

Bricktown Brewery Primetime Football

The Pro Football season is here and the Bricktown Brewery on the Casino floor is ready for the main primetime games on Sundays and Mondays. The games will be displayed on the Coors Light Superscreen with Bricktown Brewery pints of craft beer on special for just $1.50. In addition, the delicious appetizers are available for $2 off (dine-in only). The schedule this week has the New York Giants at Philadelphia on Sunday with Chicago at Dallas on Monday.

 

Live music is featured in the casino on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. This week 80z Enuff plays on Thursday at 7pm. Friday night catch Boogie Fever at 9pm. Then on Saturday night, Broxton takes the Wild Rush Stage at 9pm.

The Derby Fever All-City Disco Party is set for Thursday, Sept. 27 as Superfreak entertains during and after the races with a $1,000 Disco Costume Contest included… $400,000 Oklahoma Derby leads a racing program worth over $1 million on Sunday, Sept. 30 when the action begins at 1:30pm… The popular Oklahoma Derby Hat Contest is back on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2-4 pm on the Clubhouse level. Ladies are encouraged to wear their hats, enter the free contest and compete for more than $2,000 in cash prizes. All contestants are entered into a drawing for a Lady Diane Hat… $1 million Oklahoma Classics will be contested on Friday, Oct. 19.
