PATAKY KID GETS BULLET BREEZE FOR BREEDERS’ FUTURITY OCT. 6
Swifty Farms’ Pataky Kid, three-length winner of the Grade III Arlington-Washington Futurity on Sept. 8, breezed a bullet five furlongs in one minute flat Monday morning at Chicago’s northwest suburban oval in preparation for Keeneland’s upcoming Grade I Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity on Oct. 6.
Following the bullet five-eighths move, the juvenile son of Rockport Harbor conditioned by trainer Tom Proctor galloped out three-quarters in 1:13.40.
“Pataky Kid worked in company with another Proctor horse,” said Arlington clocker Bobby Belpedio on Thursday morning during training hours. “The track was very slow on Monday and I thought it was a very, very good work for him.”
Prior to the local one-mile Futurity, Pataky Kid broke his maiden at Arlington by three-quarters of a length in a seven-furlong race on August 9.
“Pataky Kid is still up there at Arlington,” said Christina Lawton on Thursday morning. (Lawton is the farm manager for Swifty Farms as well as the granddaughter of Swifty Farms’ owners Don and Dana Myers.) “Tom says he will be shipping down to Keeneland shortly – probably in the next couple of days.”
Lawton, it should be noted, along with her bloodstock agent mentor Donato Lanni, picked the Oklahoma-bred Pataky Kid out of a Fasig-Tipton sale at Palm Meadows last March.
“We fell in love with how big his stride was when we saw him breeze,” she said.
“Everything is still right on schedule for our colt,” Lawton added Thursday. “He’s been working well (also getting a half-mile in 49 flat 10 days after the Arlington-Washington Futurity). We’re all looking forward to the Keeneland race. We’ll all be there with bells on.”
Over the last three decades, three Arlington-Washington Futurity winners have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness or Belmont Stakes the following spring.

GOLD EDGE ON EDGE FOR KEENELAND’S ALCIBIADES STAKES OCT. 5
Dolphus Morrison’s undefeated Gold Edge, heroine of the Grade III Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes in her last start on Sept. 8, breezed six furlongs by herself in 1:14.40 over a dull Arlington Polytrack course Monday morning prior to shipping down to Lexington, Ky., on Wednesday in preparation for Keeneland’s upcoming Grade I Darley Alcibiades Stakes on Oct. 5.
“She worked fine,” said trainer Lon Wiggins, speaking over the phone from Kentucky Thursday morning of the local move which was recorded with splits of 12.40, 24.40, 36 flat, 49 flat and 1:01.40 before galloping out seven furlongs in 1:30.40. “Actually, she tried to run off a little bit but Chris (Arlington jockey Emigh) did a real good job controlling her.
“We shipped her down here yesterday,” Wiggins said, “and she trained good over the Polytrack down here this morning. We’ll probably work her again on Sunday. By then we should pretty much know who else is going in the race. I think they’re expecting a big field for the Alcibiades, with only five or six fillies going in (Belmont’s Grade I) Frizette (also for 2-year-old fillies on Oct. 6 in New York).”
Gold Edge, a Kentucky homebred daughter of Eddington, broke her maiden at first asking June 24 and won Arlington’s $65,000 Lisa M Stakes as a prep for the Lassie on August 4 in the only other start of her career.
Three years ago, Nancy Mazzoni’s She Be Wild won the Arlington-Washington Lassie before going on to victory in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies after finishing second in the Alcibiades.
