97-1 SHOT WINS SUNDAY’S THIRD RACE IN THREE-WAY PHOTO FINISH
BALTIMORE, 04-10-11---Wesley Ho and Helvi didn’t see the lead until the very last jump, but when the photo was made official, the Lori Testerman trained runner had lit up the odds board in Pimlico Race Course’s third race on the Sunday afternoon card at odds of 97-1, winning a three-way blanket finish over Patrol Leader and Night Trooper.
A field of ten $5,000 claimers contested the six-furlong event. Helvi was listed at 30-1 on the program, with just two victories in 26 starts and started from the outside post.
Night Trooper, with Forest Boyce, sprinted clear at the top of the stretch and appeared to be the clear winner but the son of Yarrow Brae weakened.
Helvi was four back as they turned for home but closed steadily and was up in time, beating Patrol Leader and Mario Pino, who rallied late between his two rivals, by a head. Night Trooper finished a nose further back.
Helvi’s win price was $196.20. The Read the Footnotes offspring helped complete at $1,145.60 exacta and a $5,847.80 trifecta. The $.10 superfecta, which was introduced at the beginning of the Pimlico spring meeting, returned $5,091.12.
