Pimlico Today-Primonetta Stakes

MISS FLEETFOOT SPLASHES TO VICTORY IN PRIMONETTA STAKES

BALTIMORE, 04-16-11---Ghost Ridge Farms & Phil Schoenthal’s Miss Fleetfoot demonstrated her love for adverse weather conditions when she sailed through an afternoon storm to win today’s feature at Pimlico Race Course, the $75,000 Primonetta Stakes for fillies and mares.

Now four-of-seven lifetime racing on an off-track, the 6-year-old rushed into contention under jockey Abel Castellano, pressing and dueling with speedy frontrunner Five Diamonds through the heavy rain and gusty wind before powering away to win the six-furlong test by 2-1/4 lengths in 1:12.02. Post time favorite Wind Caper closed to take second while Tough Talkin Lady finished a distant third.

“When we came out of the gate, she was running very hard in the slop and I felt like I had a lot of horse from the backside all the way home,” Castellano said. “Turning for home I asked her to go and she never stopped. She was so happy running in the slop.”

The winner, who is trained by owner Schoenthal, paid $11.40. The exacta with Wind Caper returned $25 and the triple with Tough Talkin’ Lady paid $63.40.

Schoenthal claimed Miss Fleetfoot on Feb. 10 for $7,500. In two starts since entering his barn, Miss Fleetfoot beat optional claimers at Laurel Park, and in her first try at Pimlico, was elevated from third to second through disqualification.

The daughter of Northern Afleet is now 13-of-26 lifetime with earnings of $234,120.

The afternoon also included the inaugural Decanter: A Day of Maryland Wine & Racing with the Maryland Jockey Club partnering with the Maryland Wineries Association for a unique event. Sixteen of the fifty licensed wineries in Maryland set up booths in the Turfside Terrace section of the public Infield, offering samples and sales of their locally crafted vintage.

THREEANDDONEDAN MAKES THREE JUVENILE WINNERS IN 24-HOURS FOR SALZMAN, JR.

For the third time in a 24-hour period, trainer John Salzman, Jr. reached the winners’ circle with a two-year-old. In Saturday’s opener, Threeanddonedan was an easy winner over four rivals in a $30,000 maiden special. The son of Dance With Ravens wired the field at odds of 1-2. Yesterday, Salzman took the first juvenile race of the year at Pimlico with promising filly Bluegrass Atatude and scored in New York with Distinctly Donovan at Aqueduct. Ten of the last 12 years, the winner of the first juvenile race in the state of Maryland has been conditioned by a Salzman (John Sr., Tim or John Jr.).
