RICH ELM CONTROLS ENTIRE TURF FEATURE, BERRY REGAINS LEAD

OKLAHOMA CITY – Rich Elm learned the ropes last month in his initial five-furlong turf sprint at Remington Park. On Friday night, he put his education to use in winning his second try over the lawn at the distance.

Owned by Carl Moore Management of Kennedale, Texas and trained by Bret Calhoun, Rich Elm was ridden smartly on the front of the 12-horse field by Cliff Berry. The 3-year-old Kentucky-bred gelding took the lead from the start of the race and controlled the pace in order to reach the finish a head in front of a charging Overthehump in :55.98 over the firm turf.

Rich Elm set solid fractions of :21.90 for the opening quarter-mile and :44.84 for a half-mile and still had enough to maintain his advantage to the line. The 8-5 wagering favorite, Rich Elm paid $5.20 to win, $4 to place and $3.40 to show. Overthehump returned $6.20 to place and $4.80 to show. Deal a King was up for third and paid $8 to show.

The win by Rich Elm was his second from four career starts and his first in two attempts at Remington Park. A son by Olmodavor from the Exploit mare Precocious, Rich Elm earned $16,785 for the victory. His lifetime bankroll now moves to $35,028.

The win aboard Rich Elm was enough to move Berry back to the top of the jockey standings with 27 wins. Aaron Gryder is second with 26 while Bryan McNeil is third with 22.
