BOWLING GREEN (G2) QUOTES

Bill Mott, winning trainer of Al Khali (No. 3): “I thought we’d be laying second to the horse on the lead [Strike a Deal]. I said, ‘The horse of Goldberg’s was on the lead in the Dixie and went wire-to-wire, and he’s probably going to lead the race.’ And he went, but then they slowed it down. At the eighth pole, I didn’t think we had any chance, but he came with a good run.”

Alan Garcia, winning jockey aboard Al Khali (No. 3): “My horse was the best today. [Trainer Bill Mott] said to me, ‘Wherever you’re comfortable, whatever you feel, wherever you want to be, it’s your decision.’ He was sitting perfectly. He was going slow then he went faster to get me out into a better spot and after that, my horse was the best. [Once I got out], I knew I had a lot of time. Mr. Mott did an excellent job with this one.”

Christophe Clement, trainer of runner-up and beaten favorite Winchester (No. 5): “He ran well, he got beat, well done to the winner. Let’s hope he can move up from that race and we’ll go to another spot in three or four weeks.”

Cornelio Velasquez, rider of runner-up and beaten favorite Winchester (No. 5): “I thought he ran very well. Once he was into the stretch, he gave me a very good run. The winner just got us at the wire.”
