CASTANON TWO CLICKS AWAY FROM 2,000-WIN MILESTONE

Veteran jockey Jesus Castanon, riding full-time at Arlington Park for the first time this season, enters Sunday’s closing day program at Chicago’s northwest suburban oval needing two wins to reach the 2,000-career win milestone.

The 37-year-old native of Panama City, Panama rode Paul Hanifi’s Alphabet Magic, trained by Michael Tomlinson, to a two and a half-length victory in Saturday’s sixth race for his 1,998th lifetime win aboard a Thoroughbred.

Castanon is listed to ride all nine races Sunday, with morning line odds suggesting he could reach that personal milestone at Arlington.

Three years ago at Arlington, veteran Chicago-based rider Randy Meier entered the last day of the local season needing a single winner to reach the 4,000-win milestone and was able to accomplish that mission that afternoon.

Castanon rides Bruce and Pamela Little’s Mojito Time, trained by Tammy Domenosky, at 5-2 in the morning line in Sunday’s opener and Midwest Thoroughbreds’ In Classic Fashion, trained by Roger Brueggemann, at 3-1 in the second half of the Daily Double.

The Kentucky resident’s other mounts, in the third through ninth races respectively with morning line odds included, are Thomas Proctor and Terry Heidmann’s Stepfather (7-2); Brueggemann Racing Stable’s Wakeupbrandon (8-1); Get In The Picture’s Tatum Girl (9-2); Patinack Farm’s King of Kendall (5-2); Maple Ridge Bloodstock and Jan and Jeff Scott’s Council Oak (3-1); Coast to Coast Racing, Larry King, Martin Silver and William Connors’ She’sfitforaking (8-1); and Salvador Hernandez’ Zizi Cat (8-1).

CATALANO SADDLES TWO, NEEDS ONE WIN TO BREAK OWN RECORD

Trainer Wayne Catalano, assured of his sixth straight training title at Arlington this season and his ninth in the last 11 years, equaled his own record of 74 wins by a trainer at an Arlington meet that he set in 2007.

The 54-year-old conditioner, born in New Orleans, Louisiana, has two chances to break that record Sunday, with Greg Besinger’s Summer Upcountry at 4-1 in the morning line in the fourth race of the day as well as Gary and Mary West Stable’s Sacred Ground at 8-1 in the sixth.

The race for leading rider honor at Arlington in 2010 is all but mathematically certain, with current leading jockey Michael Baze enjoying an eight-win advantage over last season’s defending jockey champion Junior Alvarado entering Sunday’s final racing day in 2010.

TRAINER TAMMY VOTED ARLINGTON’S ‘MISS CONGENIALITY’ FOR 2010

Trainer Tammy Domenosky, racing the bulk of her stable at Arlington for the first time this summer, was voted “Miss Congeniality” for 2010 by the members of Arlington’s racing office and presented with a grab bag of goodies in the paddock late last week.

“It was sort of an unofficial fun award we decided to give her based on her cooperation with the racing office all season,” said Amy LaFave, Arlington’s racing office administrator.

ANGEL MEGHAN RICE FLIES OVER ARLINGTON AGAIN TO ASSIST FATHER

The late Meghan Rice, daughter of longtime Arlington valet Kenny Rice and the subject of a heartwarming profile on the CBS show “Undercover Boss,”  returned to watch over her father for a surreal moment during training hours a couple of weeks ago.

Meghan, who died tragically at 20-years-of age early last year, had a race named in her honor on opening day at Arlington this summer, fulfilling a pledge made to her father by Churchill Downs Incorporated chief operating officer Bill Carstanjen.

“She’s my angel in heaven watching over me now,” said Kenny Rice after the opening day ceremonies.  Now he’s saying that his angel has returned.

“I was working a horse the other day and the girth broke,” said Rice.  “I was sure I was going to get thrown.  I had absolutely no control and I was just waiting for the saddle to slip, and I remember saying, ‘Meghan, my baby, I could sure use a little help here.’

“Somehow, I don’t know how it happened, but the saddle never slipped and I never fell off,” said Rice.  “Like I’ve said ever since she died, she’s still my angel watching over me.”

UPCOMING ARLINGTON EVENT REMINDERS

On Saturday, Oct. 2, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT, Arlington will be the site of Fork, Cork and Style – a celebration of unique cuisine and fine wine that will feature chef Emeril Lagasse.

On Sunday, Oct. 3, Arlington Park will serve as the American hub for wagering on the Group I Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe program from Longchamp Racecourse on the outskirts of Paris from 9:20 a.m. to 12:05 p.m.

On Saturday, Nov. 6, Arlington’s Million Room will be open for a simulcast of the day’s Breeders’ Cup races from Churchill Downs.
