WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK AT SARATOGA

WHAT:           Week #3 at Saratoga Race Course

WHEN:           Wednesday, August 4 – Tuesday, August 10

WHERE:        Saratoga Race Course and other locations in Saratoga Springs

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4

·        “Beat the Bugler” Celebrity Handicapping Contest: Three lucky fans will receive their very own “call to the post” from Sam the Bugler with the chance to challenge the illustrious Saratoga staple in the “Beat the Bugler” Celebrity Handicapping Contest. The three randomly selected fans will each receive a $500 fictitious bankroll to wager as they please on races five through seven. The fan with the highest bankroll after the seventh race will receive a $1,000 cash grand prize. The second and third place contestants will receive $500 and $250, respectively. Additionally, each of the participants will have their wagers stacked up against Sam’s selections to see whose picks come out on top. Prizes will automatically be doubled if the fan beats the bugler.

Racing fans can enter to win the chance to “Beat the Bugler” before 2 p.m. at the Grandstand and Paddock Information Booths and the Shake Shack, Blue Smoke and The Paddock Bar area. Entry is limited to the first 10,000 patrons; one entry per person. Three fans will be chosen to compete against Sammy following the third race. Winners must be present to participate in the contest and will need to report to the Grandstand Information Booth on the first floor by 3 p.m. to solidify their spot in the tournament.

·        Oral Cancer Screenings at Saratoga: Members of the Fourth District Dental Society and New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) will be conducting free oral cancer screenings at Saratoga Race Course from noon to 4:00 p.m. outside the Jockey Silks Room. Since the program was initiated in 2003, dentists have successfully identified a number of individuals with suspicious lesions who have been sent for follow up treatment.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 5

·        $100,000 Guaranteed Thursday Pick 6: As part of a series of three different guaranteed wagers for the 2010 meet, NYRA will offer a $100,000 Guaranteed Thursday Pick 6. This is a $2 minimum wager in which the bettor must correctly select the winners of six consecutive races.

·        World Race Course Tour at Fasig-Tipton: In the first event open to the public at Fasig-Tipton’s newly renovated sales pavilion, Paul Roberts of the London-based Turnberry Consulting will take racing fans on a tour of the world’s greatest racetracks, tracing the development of race courses from their historical antecedents in ancient Rome and Lebanon and their formal beginnings in England, through the construction of Saratoga Race Course and the completion of Meydan in Dubai in 2010. “England to Dubai: A World Race Course Tour” begins at 7 p.m. and will be introduced by Charles Hayward, president and CEO of The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA). Tickets for the event, presented by the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation and co-sponsored by the Fasig-Tipton Company and NYRA, are $10 and will be available that evening at the door.

Guests are invited to take in a day of first-class wine and thoroughbred racing as they sip and sample their way around a special section of the backyard. The first 1,500 guests will each receive a commemorative Saratoga Race Course wine glass with paid admission. Tickets can be purchased on track for $15 (tickets are purchased separately from admission to Saratoga Race Course). Registration for both events begins at 6:30 a.m.; the one-mile 'fun run' will kick off at 7:30 a.m. and the 5K race will start at 8:00 a.m. The 5K route will give runners the opportunity to see the newly renovated sales grounds, enjoy a view of the Saratoga Race Course Grandstand and see parts of the Oklahoma Training Track and the barn area. All proceeds will be divided equally among NYRA’s four charities: The Anna House, Backstretch Employee Service Team, New York Racetrack Chaplaincy and The Backstretch Education Fund.
